Dr. Sanjay Barbora



Sanjay (Xonzoi) Barbora teaches at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Guwahati Campus. He obtained a PhD in sociology from North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) in 2007, following a four-year research project on "Settler-Indigenous Conflicts in Frontier Regions" hosted at the Department of Ethnology, University of Zurich (Switzerland) by the National Centre for Competence and Research, North-South. Prior to that, he had completed his MPhil and MA in sociology from Delhi School of Economics, Delhi University. Barbora has been involved in setting up social research institutes and with the human rights movement in the North-East. Along with Dr. Walter Fernandes, he helped establish the North Eastern Social Research Centre (NESRC) in Guwahati in 2000. He has also been the regional manager for "Media and Conflict" for Panos South Asia, a media support initiative that offered platform, scholarships and exchanges for media professionals, activists and researchers in the constituent countries of South Asia. When possible, Barbora spends his time scheming and plotting different ways to encourage local communities in the North-East to apply for community radio licenses and set up low-cost, community-run radio stations. He lives in Guwahati.
